The Bibliography Department administers an electronic database and a card catalogue with references to articles on Czech theatre dating from 1851 up to the present day. There are more than 767,000 entries in the department’s bibliography collections. The department is one of the most important sources of information on Czech theatre in terms of the range of literature it captures and because of the department’s observance of high cataloguing standards.

The Bibliography Department was established at the ATI in 1996. It continued the work of the Bibliography Section of the Conference of Czech Theatre Historians and work on the retrospective and bibliographic card catalogues in what used to be the Theatre Institute, catalogues that had been compiled since the late 1950s. In 1996 work began on creating an electronic database and the range of source materials expanded to include not just specialised periodicals but also the main national quality press titles and selected sources dealing with Czech subject matter published in periodicals abroad. After 2005 the range of sources processed expanded to include online websites and over time the majority of entries were linked to the full texts of the articles.

Collections

The Bibliography Department administers two basic bibliographic collections: an online database of articles and a collection of scanned card catalogues with records of articles published between 1851 and 1990. The department also has every volume of Articles in Czech Periodicals (for the years 1953–1990), which were published by the National Library of the Czech Republic, and a number of other print bibliographies specialising in Czech theatre (e.g. the periodical Theatre).

The card catalogue contains more than 390,000 bibliographic entries for articles.

This bibliography covers work published in selected specialised periodicals and the daily press between 1851 and 1990. Among the four sub-categories of this bibliography there are two that are of primary importance for visitors: the Czech Theatre Bibliography 1851–1990 (Catalogue 1), which primarily covers articles published between the middle of the 19th century and around the middle of the 20th century; and the Czech Theatre Bibliography 1851–1990 (Catalogue 2), which primarily covers articles published between the middle of the 20th century and the year 1990.
