36Q°

A site-specific exhibition of sound and lighting design.

36Q° is the name of a site-specific exhibition of sound and lighting design that was organised by the Prague Quadrennial and for the period of one week illuminated the unique space of the Lapidarium at Prague Exhibition Grounds in Prague. The exhibition was accompanied by an international conference of scenic designers in the Czech Museum of Music (České muzeum hudby).

The Prague Quadrennial drew esteemed experts in the field of sound and lighting design to Prague: Rob Kaplowitz, winner of a prestigious Tony Award and OBIE 2006 and 2007 for sound design, along with Sarah EC Maines, Henk van der Geest, Kathrine Sandys, Nick Hunt, Ondřej Růžička, and Jakub Daníček.
The National Museum’s Lapidarium is a distinctive space filled with historical sculptures, some of which are as old as from the 11th century. One of this exhibition’s central themes was the ability of light, sound, and new media to transform a gallery into a dynamic, imaginative space that offers visitors a new perspective on how the setting of a performance is creatively put together.
The stars of this international gathering of lighting and sound designers were Tupac Martir and Yaron Abulafia, who made a presentation of their work. Martir is known primarily for his work as the author of ‘stage designs’ for Beyoncé, Sting, and Elton John; Yaron Abulafia won renown for the meticulously elaborated lighting designs he created, for example, for Nederlands Dans Theatre and Israeli choreographer Itzik Galili.
Project 36Q° reflects an important direction within the PQ programme, which involves organising smaller events around the big event of the PQ itself and focusing more on sound and lighting design, and in this way supporting and increasing the visibility of these two scenic elements.
